Repairs

What causes a garage door spring to break?+

Normal metal fatigue is the most common cause. Rust, temperature changes and incorrect sizing can also shorten a spring’s life. Springs are rated for a set number of cycles, and every open and close uses one.

Why did my garage door suddenly get so heavy?+

A broken spring. The springs do the lifting; the opener only guides the door. Stop running the opener and call for a spring replacement.

My door is crooked on one side. What happened?+

A lift cable has usually come off its drum or snapped, or a roller has come out of the track. Leave the door where it is and call; forcing it can bend the track or panels.

Can I repair my own garage door spring?+

We strongly advise against it. Torsion springs are under extreme tension and cause serious injuries every year. Spring replacement is a job for a trained technician with the right tools.

How quickly can you schedule service?+

Availability varies by day and repair type. Call 253-353-4116 for the fastest current scheduling information.

Openers

Should I repair or replace my garage door opener?+

Repair often makes sense for a newer opener with a single failed part. Replacement is usually the better value when an older unit is unreliable or missing modern safety features such as photo-eye sensors and battery backup.

Why does my door reverse before it closes?+

Something is interrupting the safety sensors near the bottom of the track, the sensors are misaligned, or the door is binding and tripping the force limit. Clear the sensors first, then call if it continues.

My remote only works when I am close to the door. Why?+

Usually a weak remote battery. If a new battery does not help, the opener’s antenna may be damaged or something nearby is causing radio interference.

Can I control my garage door from my phone?+

Yes. Most new openers include built-in Wi-Fi and an app. Some existing openers can be upgraded with an add-on controller.

New doors

How much does a new garage door cost?+

Pricing depends on size, material, insulation, windows, hardware and installation needs. Call us for recommendations based on your property.

How long does it take to get a new door installed?+

Standard doors are typically available within a few weeks and custom doors take longer. Installation itself is usually completed in a day.

Do I need an insulated garage door?+

If the garage is attached, heated, used as a workspace or has living space above it, an insulated door is worth it for comfort, energy savings and quieter operation.

Can I keep my current opener with a new door?+

Often, yes, if the opener is in good condition and rated for the weight of the new door. We check it as part of the installation.

Maintenance and general

How often should my garage door be serviced?+

Once a year is right for most homes. High-use doors, wood doors and commercial doors benefit from service twice a year.

What lubricant should I use?+

A garage-door-specific silicone or lithium spray on rollers, hinges, bearings and springs. Keep lubricant off the tracks.

What areas do you serve?+

Puyallup, Spanaway, Tacoma, Lakewood, Bonney Lake, Sumner, Orting and the surrounding Pierce County communities. See our service areas page.

Are you licensed?+

Yes. C&K Garage Doors is a registered Washington contractor, license CKGARGD813NB, and a BBB Accredited Business.
