Behind Our Work
Broken Garage Door Spring Replacement
A garage door spring is engineered for a set number of cycles. Standard springs are typically rated around 10,000 cycles, which for many households is seven to ten years of use. Cold Pacific Northwest mornings, rust and a spring that was never sized correctly for the door all shorten that life. When a spring lets go, you will usually hear a loud bang from the garage, and afterwards the door will barely move or the opener will strain and stop.
Replacing a spring is not a do-it-yourself job. Torsion springs are wound under extreme tension and injure people every year. Our technicians measure the door’s weight and the existing spring’s wire size, length and inside diameter, then install a correctly matched spring and set the tension so the door balances properly. If a door has two springs, we recommend replacing both at the same time because the second spring has the same cycle count and will fail soon after.

| Spring type | Where it is | How it works | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Torsion spring | On a steel shaft above the door opening | Winds and unwinds to lift the door through cables and drums | Smoother, longer lasting and safer. The standard on most modern doors. |
| Extension spring | Along each horizontal track, one per side | Stretches as the door closes and pulls it up as it opens | Common on older and lighter doors. Must have safety cables through the coil. |
How We Replace a Spring
Measure and match
We weigh the door and measure the old spring so the replacement is sized for your door, not a generic fit.
Secure and remove
The door is clamped and the old spring is unwound safely before the cables and drums come off.
Install and wind
The new spring is installed, the cables are re-seated on the drums and the spring is wound to the correct tension.
Balance and test
The door should stay put at waist height on its own. We confirm that, then test the opener force and safety reverse.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does garage door spring replacement cost?+
Cost depends on the spring type, size and whether the door uses one spring or two. Call 253-353-4116 and we will give you a straight answer for your door.
Should I replace both springs if only one broke?+
On a two-spring door, yes. Both springs have the same number of cycles on them, and the second one usually fails soon after the first. Replacing both at once saves a second service call.
Can I open the door manually with a broken spring?+
A single-car door may be liftable with two people, but a double door can weigh well over 150 pounds without spring assistance. We recommend leaving it closed until it is repaired.
How long does the repair take?+
Most spring replacements take about an hour once the technician is on site.
